Eyemake Shapes

I'm putting this page up for a reference guide for gyaru who want to change up their makeup style in an easy way, or to new members of the gyaru scene who want to know what types of eye makeup there is and how it looks on double eyelids. The problem I find is that a lot of people directly copy the steps from Japanese tutorials - and while we want our makeup to look as close to it as possible, often the steps are for a completely different eye shape - usually an almond eye with monolids. Of course, eyetape and glue is often used to get a double-eyelid but if you happen to be either European or from the Americas etc, our eyes usually open a little wider. So for looks like Manba/Banba etc, you may need to make adjustments in order for the makeup to sit nicely.

Here I will go through each standard makeup type for gyaru with it's term and what it looks like on both East Asian and Caucasian eyes (If any lovely WoC would like to submit pictures showing examples of these too, please drop me a message!)

つり目・猫目・Cat Eye

The cat eye is a classic and sensual look all around the world, Depending on the look you want, you can either have the eyeliner closer to the eye to look more dramatic, or taper the liner to lift upwards at the edge of your eye to make them look more "open". Sayoko Ozaki is famous for usually sporting this look, but I chose a picture of Izumi Mana as the example on the left. :)

タレ目・タヌキ目・Droopy Eye

This is probably the style that is used the most on Japanese gyaru. Because gyaru evolved to have the whole "deka-me"/big eyes makeup, this is perfect for making your eyes look bigger. If you have larger eyes naturally, it might be a good idea to only ever-so-slightly droop your eyes or avoid it. OTT droop is reserved for manba/banba makeup.

デカタレ目・Big Droopy Eye

As mentioned above, this is for older and bolder gyaru styles like Manba/Banba/Romanba. Sometimes seen in Psy-gyaru too depending on the individual. While it's certainly lost it's popularity, some gyaru still wear this makeup style often, or for fun.

パッチリ丸目・Round Eye

This is a common style you'll find on gyaru with cuter tastes, I used to see it a lot in Ageha and Ranzuki etc. The aim of the game is to make your eyes as round and open as possible! (without looking scary) - aim for lashes that have thicker, more concentrated parts in the middle, and that don't have a 'wing'.  bottom lashes can be your own or natural-looking ones. (clearly my eye wasn't open enough in this picture lol but Satomin demonstrates this perfectly~)

わんこ目・Puppy Eye

This is a newer style, made popular by the rising Korean influence of 'aegyosal'/'namidabukuro' in Japanese, or eye bags in English. The trend looks a little similar to a natural droopy eye, but with your eye bags softly lined, so that it makes you look 'innocent' and that you have those "puppy eyes-I-can-get-whatever-I-want" eyes (lol). Natural contacts are often used in conjuction with this look. The girl on the left drew huge ones, but I wanted to put up a clear example!

切れ長目・Almond Eye

This usually is seen in Oraora and more mature gyaru styles. It concentrates on making the edges pointed, emphasizing the almond-ness of an eye. Darker or black eyeshadow is used underneath and at the outer-edge of the eye to make it seem more elongated. Eyeliner is usually pretty simple. Sometimes the word '切れ長’/'Kirenaga' refers to the point that some gyaru draw in the inner-corner of their eye.
